Sample Project: Drone mapping
at Enaki

Drone Technology is the leading technological disrupter of 21 century! From delivering parcels to doorstep to saving lives in remote areas by medical supplies; it’s a technology that cannot be overlooked by any industry, not even by Geospatial. On April 2023, Orbital was contracted by HassConsult to conduct drone mapping at
Enaki and Kikuyu sites in Nairobi and Kiambu counties respectively. The total area mapped was 25 acres. The cloud cover was 0.5% & wind speed 2m/s. The site was relatively flat so about 4 ground control points were installed. A total of 845 ovelapping drone images were captured at a flying height of 90 m above ground level.

1. Project Name

Drone Mapping and Topographical Surveys at Enaki Site in Westlands, Nairobi

2. Equipment used

  • DJI Phantom 4 Pro v2 Drone
  • Stonex S800A GNSS Receivers

3. Software used

  • DJI Go: Used for drone callibation and firmware updates.
  • DroneDeploy: Drone flight planning and drone mapping.
  • Pix4D: Drone data processing and generation of outputs.
  • Field Genius v10: Used with GNSS data loggers to collected topo data.
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D 2023: Plotting, drafting and design of topo data.
  • Esri ArcGIS Pro: Used in spatial analysis, map design and production.

4. Methodology

The project scope entailed the following:

  • Drone/Aerial Survey: Establishment of the drone Ground Control Points (GCPs) in 3 sites (Enaki, Botanical and Westlands); flight planning; drone mapping (25 Acres); Drone image processing; generation of oututs.
  • Control and Topo Survey: Monumentation of the survey Benchmarks (BMs); carried out detailed topographical survey for 20 acres picking features e.g. trees, fences, roads, buildings, road kerbs; spot heights etc; data processing in Civil 3D and ArcGIS.

5. Deliverables

  • Overlapping raw drone images;
  • An Orthomosaic (5cm res);
  • A Digital Surface Model (DSM);
  • Point Cloud data (x,y & z);
  • Digital Elevation Model (DEM);
  • Digital Terrain Model (DTM);
